Description

The School of Journalism and Communication is dedicated to strengthening the democratisation process in Ethiopia through training professional journalists. The Postgraduate Division of the School was established in March 2004 to produce qualified and professional journalists in the area of journalism and communications.

Programmes

  1. Post-Graduate Degree in Journalism and Communications -
    The educational approach of the programme is informed by the Gimlekollen Model which has three legs:
    • The interrelation between theory and practice
    • The emphasis on issues of democracy and human rights
    • The importance of ethical consciousness.

    Students accepted for the MA degree programme must hold a BA or BS degree in any chosen field of study. They are also required to pass an entrance examination. The examination is designed by Gimlekollen School of Journalism and Communication (GSJC) according to the Addis Ababa University (AAU) policy, and will count towards 70% of the assessment to the programme. The remaining 30% will consist of the grade point average from the BA studies.

  2. Master's degree in Journalism and Communications - The Master's degree in Journalism and Communications aims not only to train critical journalists for the Ethiopian media, but also to equip students with academic competence that would permit them to pursue media and communications research. The programme has a particular focus on news and investigative journalism as well as on issues related to media, democracy and human rights.

    Students are required to choose between a print/web journalism stream and a radio/television journalism stream.
