The African Virtual University (AVU) is working in collaboration with African universities to identify the most essential programs needed for Africa’s development. Upon identifying the programs the AVU partners with other universities in the world to develop content and delivery aimed at African students, professionals and civil servants.

1. Certificate in Journalism - This 12-month certificate course in journalism from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania aims to build a cadre of community journalists who are knowledgeable about the political, cultural and historical environment in which information gathering and dissemination takes place in Africa. The program will produce high quality community journalists with an intellectual, professional and practical knowledge about their role in society.

   One of the modules on Community Journalism aims to give students an understanding of the role of a journalist and the mass media in society. This course falls within the Third World concept of journalism, namely developmental journalism, whose focus is to inform and educate people on a variety of socio-economic and developmental issues.
