Centre for Peace and Reconciliation Studies

Description

The Centre aims to be a space for research, teaching, and related activities which will contribute to the deeper understanding and promotion of processes of peace and reconciliation throughout the world. It is intended that the fruits of the work carried out at the Centre will empower those at the grass-roots, national, and international levels who are striving to transform violent conflict situations by nonviolent means and lay the foundations for peace and reconciliation between the parties to conflict.

A basic premise informing the work at the Centre is that within the context of struggles to achieve peace and reconciliation at whatever level, the transformative power of nonviolence in such processes is not only under-estimated but also under-researched. The aim is to help people develop their capacities, and, to this end, training in project management specifically designed for those working with peace and change agencies is incorporated in the programme.

The aim of our postgraduate programmes is to enable students to:

  • Develop the knowledge and skill base necessary to understand the linkages between the different levels of destructive conflict in the world.
  • Understand the theory and practice of conflict transformation, peacemaking, and peace-building at the various levels.

  • Evaluate alternative modes of action and intervention in the attempt to transform violent and destructive conflict along nonviolent and constructive channels.

    1) The successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Conflict Resolution Skills. This programme is delivered by means of a blend of distance learning and an intensive two-week residential course in Coventry.
