Description
From 2003, the Culture, Communication and Media Studies (CCMS) Graduate Programme will allow students to mix and match courses to suit their own career and academic interests at both under- and post-graduate levels.
Programmes
- Undergraduate course - The undergraduate course offers a selection of modules including a module on Development communication. This module examines the evolution of major theories of development, including the modernisation paradigm, dependency and participatory approaches. It will investigate current problems facing development communicators, and concrete applications of communication to problems in development. It focuses on the role of communication in intentional social change, specifically on how communication is used to facilitate the process of human development.
- Honors Degree - The honors degree offers a selection of modules including a module on Education Entertainment for Health Promotion. The purpose of this module is to acquaint students with broad approaches to communicating for health promotion, focusing specifically on the role of entertainment-education. The module can also be taken on its own for certificate rather than degree purposes, or as part of another programme offered at the University.
- Masters Degrees and PH.D.'s in Culture, Communication & Media - The CCMS programme recognises that South Africa's diverse society requires media professionals with strategic and technological skills, and long-term conceptual vision, who can transform modern theories into practice. Creativity, strategic analysis and problem-solving skills are taught in the framework of three integrated fields - cultural, communication, and media studies.
CCMS course titles include:
- Health Promotion Through Entertainment Education
- Media in the Global World
- Visual Anthropology/Documentary Film
The CCMS Programme aims to produce informed researchers, creative business strategists and strategic thinkers rather than media technicians.
The CCMS Postgraduate Programme student body is global, multinational and multiligual. The new programme is designed to offer a richly rewarding student environment and more. It will also continue to draw on the expertise of visiting lecturers locally and from abroad.
