Rhodes University - South Africa

Department

Rhodes School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS)

Description

The Rhodes School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) aims to produce self-reflexive, critical, analytical graduates and media workers, whose practice is probing, imaginative, civic-minded, and outspoken. According to the University, graduates are equipped to act as thoughtful, creative, and skilled journalists and media practitioners able to make meaningful and technically proficient media productions. The departmental approach to critical aspects of media theory is intended to enable post-graduate students to conduct research into a wide range of media interests: newsroom practices, media and democracy, broadcast policy, information and communication technology (ICT), community radio, HIV/AIDS media, and globalised media reception (to name just a few).

Programmes

  1. Master of Arts (MA) in Journalism and Media Studies - This MA degree is designed to provide students with a sophisticated understanding of the interrelationships between the media and society. According to the University, the course will suit university graduates who are eager to explore areas of Journalism & Media Studies in greater depth and are capable of independent study.

The Masters degree in Journalism and Media Studies is a coursework and mini-thesis qualification that can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students spend at least twelve months in residence to take the degree. Part-time students take the degree over two years with three visits to Rhodes each year. The format of the part-time degree courses creates access to higher education for people unable to take off a full year from work for residential study.

This Masters course aims to develop critical understanding and appreciation of conceptual and theoretical debates relating to media. Students are also required to conduct research and develop new knowledge in the field of media.

Candidates would normally be expected to have completed an Honours degree or a four-year undergraduate degree. However, consideration is also given to applicants with extensive media experience.
