St. Augustine University of Tanzania

Description

St. Augustine University of Tanzania is an independent higher-learning institution governed by the University Council under the Catholic Bishops of Tanzania (Tanzania Episcopal Conference or TEC) and is operated with close attention to the requirements of governmental and relevant professional bodies.Established in 1998, St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT)offers academic degree programmes in a scholarly atmosphere. The University attracts students from Tanzania and elsewhere, particularly the countries of East and Central Africa: Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Malawi and Burundi. SAUT admits students of all religious background.

The University currently specialises in Journalism (both print and Broadcast). The University also sponsors short courses and seminars and provides consultancy and research services.

Programmes

  1. Advanced Diploma in Journalism - This three-year course is designed to produce media personnel who may be employed as news reporters and editors, press officers, broadcast personnel, public relations officers, social communications coordinators, or specialists in related fields.
  2. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication - Undergraduate:
    A three-year course emphasising a broad academic approach to media studies and how the media function in society. Besides learning and specialised training in the print media, broadcasting, or public relations, students are challenged to explore critical questions, engage in extensive research, and examine areas of planning and media management.

Certificate Programme for Environmental Journalism and Communication (CEJC)
In collaboration with Swedish International Development Coorperation Agency (SIDA), SAUT runs a two-week Certificate programme on Environmental Journalism and Communication (CEJC). This programme, which was introduced in September 2002, is run simultaneously in the five countries of the Eastern Africa region, namely, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi. One university from each of these countries offers this programme. In Tanzania, it is St Augustine University that through the faculty of Humanities and Communications offers training for the CEJC programme.

The general objectives of the Journalism and Communication training programme is to improve the quality of environmental reporting in the media in the Eastern Africa region through training; networking; community outreach; and developing positive attitudes towards sustainable management of resources through the media.
