Description

As part of the Center for the Study of Human Rights' mission, the Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) brings human rights leaders from the Global South and marginalised communities in the United States to Columbia University to engage national and international policymakers on impacts of the global economy on their communities.

Programmes

  1. Human Rights Advocates Programme - The Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) is designed to enable participants to advocate more effectively by building crucial skills for strategic planning, fundraising, utilising the press and media, and building sustainable organisations. The capacity-building programme focuses on key issue areas including labour rights, migration, health, environmental justice, corporate social accountability, sustainable development, and international financial institutions (IFIs). Activists working on these areas from a gender, racial or ethnic perspective are strongly encouraged to apply. In 2007, the programme was expanded to include issues related to intolerance, marginalisation, and xenophobia as relates to globalisation. Activitists working in these areas are also encouraged to apply.

    Central to HRAP is a four-month residency at Columbia University that includes the following:
    • Academic courses on international human rights standards and the impact of the global economy on human rights;
    • Skills workshops on advocacy planning and strategies, fundraising, press and media, and building sustainable organisations;
    • Meetings and networking opportunities with NGO and corporate leaders, public officials, representatives of IFIs, and United Nations staff central to the global economy in New York and Washington, DC.

    During their residency, the Advocates are given numerous opportunities to engage non-government organisations (NGOs), corporations, governments, foundations, the United Nations, and international financial institutions.

    The programme is designed to enable participating Advocates to build networks and create connections, as well as to learn skills that they then may employ upon their return to their home organisations.
