Description

The University of Kassel, founded in 1971, is the newest university in the state of Hessen, Germany. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes in the fields of:

  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Economics and Business
  • Natural Sciences
  • Engineering Sciences
  • Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Planning
  • International Agriculture and Environmental Protection
  • Fine Arts

All study programmes are open to German and international students alike. A range of degrees can be obtained, including the traditional German Diplom degrees, Bachelor's and Master's degrees, the Artistic Examination, or a PhD.

Programmes

  1. European Master of Arts in Media, Communication, and Cultural Studies -

    Universität Kassel is a member of the European Union (EU)-endorsed master programme "CoMundus" - European Master of Arts in Media, Communication, and Cultural Studies.

    Lectures are given by representatives having the status of lecturers and honorary professors, who are professionals from media institutions with job experience. In the summer term, scholars of the University of Kassel offer classes weekly. Students study five modules, which are arranged according to the areas of study and to practical relevance to the media.


    Areas of study:

    • I. Theory, History, Epistemology of Media, Culture, and Communication
    • II. Institutions, Law, Politics, Economy of Media
    • III. Media as Texts, Media Production and Analyses, Multimedia
    • IV. Audience, Reception, and Media Education
    Students are offered participation in a number of faculty-led research projects, including:
    • Within the area of media reception and development of media literacy: the research project “Annual programme analysis on children’s TV”, in which the German television programme is analysed qualitatively, focussing on it’s influence on children's interpretation of themselves and their environment. Also, children’s media literacy in everyday life and its relevance for school and teaching is the object of a research project with the aim of combining everyday media literacy with the didactic use of supervised internet sites. Thirdly, there is a research focus on mobile learning (m-learning) and implications for the socialisation of young people as well as implications for learning and teaching.
    • A research project "Aesthetic of Exposition and Exhibition"
    • "Computational Linguistics Laboratory," which provides support for a wide spectrum of projects in areas such as automatic textual processing of digital media streams, data base technologies in media studies or electronically augmented universes of discourse.
