University of Kwazulu Natal - Durban, South Africa

Summary

University of Kwazulu Natal

Formerly: University of Natal

Location: Durban, South Africa

Department: Culture and Media Studies

Description: From 2003, the Culture, Communication and Media Studies (CCMS) Graduate Programme will allow students to mix and match courses to suit their own career and academic interests at both under- and post-graduate levels.

Programme:

Masters Degrees and PH.D.'s in Culture, Communication & Media

The CCMS programme recognises that South Africa's diverse society requires media professionals with strategic and technological skills, and long-term conceptual vision, who can transform modern theories into practice. Creativity, strategic analysis and problem-solving skills are taught in the framework of three integrated fields - cultural, communication, and media studies.

CCMS course titles include:

  • Health Promotion Through Entertainment Education
  • Media in the Global World
  • Visual Anthropology/Documentary Film

The CCMS Programme aims to produce informed researchers, creative business strategists and strategic thinkers rather than media technicians.

The CCMS Postgraduate Programme student body is global, multinational and multiligual. The new programme is designed to offer a richly rewarding student environment and more. It will also continue to draw on the expertise of visiting lecturers locally and from abroad.

The CCMS core staff includes:

Professor Keyan Tomaselli, who has consulted for UNESCO, Dept of Health, and the National Research Foundation. He co-wrote the Film "White Paper" and the DACST Film Strategy Document, and has published books and articles on media, cinema and cultural studies. He has worked in the film and TV industries, has produced films and videos, and has freelanced as a journalist.

Professor Ruth Teer-Tomaselli, two-time SABC Board member, has consulted for various United Nations agencies, and has worked in advertising, publishing and broadcasting.

Mr. Marc Caldwell, lecturer, has worked as a journalist and journalism trainer. A large number of his past students have gone on to make successful journalism careers for themselves in the print and broadcast media.

The CCMS programme is supported by lecturers from other programmes in the University: English, Translation Studies, Internet studies, Drama and Performance Studies, and Linguistics.

Part-time lecturers and internationally-based adjunct and visiting professors and researchers from all over the world are also contributors to CCMS's graduate courses in particular.
