Migratory Birds: From Messengers of Life to Ambassadors of Death?

Convention on Migratory Species

February 22 2006

Summary

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with its associated Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and the African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) have launched a campaign to remind the world that migrations are essential to natural processes for the effective functioning of our ecosystems. The campaign is
to reverse the public perception, often supported by inaccurate media coverage, that migratory birds are responsible for the spread of avian influenza (avian flu or bird flu). According to AEWA’s Mr. Bert Lenten, "Blaming migratory birds seems the easiest way not to focus on the real problems related to development and unsustainable agricultural practices."

To promote awareness on the importance of bird migrations for ecosystem functioning, as well as to inform on the threats and the conservation challenges birds face, UNEP, AEWA and CMS have launched the “World Migratory Bird Day”, to be celebrated every year on a date in early spring (this year the celebration will be held on April 8th). The campaign is inviting governments, international organisations and the general public to raise awareness on the threats faced by birds. Information delivered during the events will include up-to-date information on avian influenza and its effects on birds.
