Publication Date

June 2007

Summary

Provided by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council, this aims to be a comprehensive listing (for 2007) of internet-based resources in support of preparedness for a possible future avian influenza or human influenza pandemic. The list is organised in sections that highlight international and government websites, as well as academic, business, and private sector resources.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is an economic forum for a group of Pacific Rim countries to discuss matters on regional economy, cooperation, trade, and investment. The APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) was created by the APEC economic leaders in November 1995 to provide advice on specific business sector priorities and to respond when the various APEC fora request information about business-related issues or to provide the business perspective on specific areas of cooperation.

From the ABAC website: "The 2007 work program continues to advance the APEC agenda on trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, bolster efforts on capacity building and strengthening financial systems in the region, further work on technology- and information-related issues and enhance APEC structures and APEC-ABAC collaboration. Key priorities identified in the 2007 work program include, inter-alia: restarting and successfully concluding the WTO Doha Development Agenda negotiations; developing ideas, including action on model measures for regional trading arrangement (RTA)/free trade agreement (FTA) chapters and core principles of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP); transparency and ease of doing business; securing movement of goods and people; APEC Individual Action Plan (IAP) peer review; responding to regional emergencies; small and medium enterprises (SMEs); information society strategic vision; intellectual property rights; energy and climate change; deepening and strengthening capital markets and improving financial system capability; and capacity building and market opening, and improving investment environments."
