Summary

This training manual of the India HIV/AIDS Alliance describes ways in which non-governmental organisations (NGOs) may design, deliver and manage training programmes for peer educators. Its purpose is to assist NGOs to design and implement strategies and work plans for peer education, as part of comprehensive sexual health interventions.

This training manual is written for NGO support programmes, national and international NGOs, individual trainers and community-based organisations (CBOs) to use in training groups of 15-20 participants.

In its introduction, the manual clearly delineates choices to be made in organising a peer education programme and gives suggestions for organisation in a "Tips" chart. It then supplies materials for a six-day session. These include:
  • Session objectives;
  • Time period;
  • Materials needed;
  • Methodology;
  • Handouts; and
  • Trainer's preparation.
A typical day of sessions might be:
Day 2
  • Session 7. Sex and Sexuality.
  • Session 8. Sexually Transmitted Infections and Safer Sex.
  • Session 9. Introduction to HIV/AIDS.
  • Session 10. How does HIV/AIDS Spread.
  • Session 11. Differences between HIV and AIDS and the Importance of Understanding the Differences.
In its annexes, the document includes a resource pack of Participatory Tool Cards for Interpersonal Communication with facilitator notes on how to facilitate behaviour change. It contains reporting forms on registering, referring, and record keeping, an annex on organising sessions for sex workers, and a peer educator record.
