EarthWire Africa

Summary

EarthWire/Africa is an online resource which offers free daily overviews of environmental news from 14 countries in southern Africa which include Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Republic of Congo, Seychelles, Swaziland, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

This online resource is intended for use by government officials for briefings on daily environmental news, journalists following relevant issues, students and researchers looking for current information on the state of the environment, and anyone interested in current events and the environment.

Every weekday, a team of African journalists reviews more than 40 newspapers for environment-related news stories. Relevant stories are included in EarthWire/Africa where they can be viewed by country, topic, or time period. A search engine allows users to search for issues and keywords in the archive. Press releases and news from research organisations, the public sector, and environmental organisations are included as well.

This is the second in a series of regional news services, the first of which was EarthWire/Norway. There is also a special edition of EarthWire for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. EarthWire/World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), partly financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Environment, is a joint initiative by [Global Resource Information Database] GRID-Arendal, a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) initiative, and the South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. In 2005 EarthWire/Serbia was also launched.

With EarthWire's email feed, it is possible to receive environmental news from southern Africa every day. The email service is free and gives the option to choose news related to specified environmental topics or regions.
