Spending on HIV/AIDS activities rose from US$998 million in 2000 to US$6.1 billion in 2004.

In 2004:

  • 33% of this spending came from in-country sources - national governments, communities and individual families.
  • 31% came from bilateral sources.
  • The remainder came from multilateral and private sector sources.

Given current trends, UNAIDS estimates that total HIV/AIDS spending will be US$8.3 billion in 2006, US$8.9 billion in 2007 and US$10 billion in 2008.

Total estimated spending needs are US$14.9 billion in 2006, US$18.1 billion in 2007 and US$22.1 billion in 2008.
