US National Healthcare Disparities Report

Date

August 4 2006

The 3rd US National Healthcare Disparities Report provides a comprehensive national overview of disparities in health care among racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups in the general United States population and within priority populations. It also tracks the success of activities to reduce disparities.

For sizable proportions of measures, minorities and the economically poor receive lower quality care:

  • Together, Blacks and American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) received poorer quality care than Whites for about 40% of core report measures. Blacks received better quality care than Whites for 11% of measures, and AI/ANs received better quality care for 14% of measures.
  • Asians received poorer quality care than Whites for 21% of core report measures and better quality care for 38% of measures.
  • Hispanics received poorer quality of care than non-Hispanic Whites for over half of core report measures and better quality care for 16% of measures.
  • Economically poor people received lower quality of care than high income people for 85% of core report measures and better quality care for 8% of measures.

For racial minorities, all disparities in access to care that could be tracked are becoming smaller; for Hispanics and the economically poor, most disparities are becoming larger. Of core report measures of access that could be tracked over time:

  • All disparities experienced by Blacks, Asians, and AI/ANs were becoming smaller.
  • About 20% of disparities experienced by Hispanics and by economically poor people were becoming smaller and about 80% were becoming larger.
