Summary

This toolkit was designed to help World Bank task managers plan and supervise the implementation of communications programmes as part of their population, health and nutrition (PNH) activities. The author provides a step-by-step guide for "planning and implementing communication activities and linking those steps to the Bank's project cycle."

The toolkit contains eleven modules, including information on:
  • Communication research approaches for Bank projects
  • A guide to communication indicators
  • Sample terms of reference for Bank and Borrower consultants
  • Guide questions for assessing organisational capacity
  • A sample budget and implementation plan
  • Case studies of best practice in behaviour change communication
Case studies include use of communication strategies including television, radio, personal interactions and telephone hotlines. These "best practice" examples include:
  • Promoting Family Planning in Bangladesh
  • Increasing Immunisation coverage in Ecuador
  • Marketing Iodised salt in Ecuador
  • Improving Nutritional status in Indonesia
  • Initiating Breastfeeding in Jordan
  • Promoting Sexual Responsibility among Teens in the Philippines
  • Reducing the spread of HIV/IDS in Zaire
