TB: The Ignored Disease

Date

May 5 2006

  • Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of death for people with HIV/AIDS (PWHAs) - 1 in 3 deaths of PWHAs is caused by TB.
  • There has been a lack of integration of TB and HIV/AIDS treatment and care - there have been 21 new HIV drugs for every one new TB drug since 1986.
  • TB drugs are not seen as an attractive investment for drug companies - the test for TB is 100 years old and the vaccine being used today is the same as it was 80 years ago.
  • 2 billion people, equal to a third of the world's population, are infected with TB.
