Cyber Cafés, A How-to Manual: Including Designing a Web Site and Implementing an Online Peer Education ProgramAuthorAlex Franka and Jessie Gilliam
SummaryThis 88-page How-to Manual aims to assist youth in creating programmes and promoting policies that help
young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. The cyber café is defined as seeking to help people: 1) access the Internet and search for accurate and up to date information on sexual health; 2) experience community, both online and off; 3) increase youth's computer literacy; and 4) improve youth's job related skills.
While much of the manual’s content is based on the Central American experience with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) youth, the manual is intended for use in other parts of the world and with youth who are not GLBT. The authors pilot tested the manual with three non-government organisations in sub-Saharan Africa: Youth Health Organization in Gaborone, Botswana; Township Aids Project in Johannesburg, South Africa; and Youth Action Rangers of Nigeria, in Lagos, Nigeria.
