Anti-Polio End Game Set Backs

Date

November 11 2005

The Polio Eradication Initiative was started in 1988 by the service club Rotary International.

It originally planned to stop polio transmission by 2000.

The target was moved to 2005 when it became clear the 2000 target would not be reached.

In 2003 several northern Nigerian states ceased polio vaccination amid rumours the polio campaign was an anti-Muslim plot to sterilise people or cause AIDS.

During the cessation polio flared up and was carried to neighbouring countries - jumping across Africa, into the Middle East and in 2005 into Asia.

While immunisation has resumed again in Nigeria, in several countries the virus is circulating again with multiple breakouts.

Much now depends on the eradication efforts of these countries.

About US$4 billion has been spent on the campaign over the past 17 years.
