Civil Society Index: Assessing and Strengthening Civil Society WorldwidePublication Date2004 SummaryThis report provides a detailed account of the project approach, as well as the conceptual and analytical framework and research methodology of the CIVICUS Civil Society Index (CSI) Project. The CSI is a participatory needs assessment and action planning tool for civil society in countries around the world, with the aim to create a knowledge base and an impetus for civil society strengthening initiatives.
The report discusses the issues around conceptualising and assessing civil society in a comparative manner in countries around the world. The CSI is implemented by, and for, civil society organisations. It also actively involves, and disseminates its findings to a broad range of stakeholders including governments, donors, academics and the public at large. The author describes the principles that inform the project, its potential contributions to civil society practice and also traces its history from its inception in 1999. It concludes by outlining the many innovative features of the CSI and its relevance for civil society leaders, donors, policy-makers and academics alike.
