RegenerationSummaryThis quarterly magazine seeks to create awareness of the regenerative and urban renewal processes in Johannesburg, South Africa for the larger public in the city. Formed as an initiative that developed out of a partnership with the Creative Inner City Initiative (CICI) training program for young emerging artists in Johannesburg, the magazine seeks to position itself as a platform for promoting arts and culture projects that use art as a major tool for transformation that “rejuvenates spaces and perceptions of the environment and communities.” The goal of the CICI is to engage with urban renewal and human and community development through artistic and cultural activities.
The general theme of the magazine encompasses creative uses of waste for the regeneration of the inner city. The editorial team seeks to reach out to a diverse public in the city, including business professionals, theatregoers, daily traffic and tourists. “Beyond being a platform for the creative youth in our inner city, the magazine now serves as a tool to develop a sharing of knowledge between artistic and cultural communities who practice within the inner city to create a networking and mapping platform.” Some of the organisations and programmes featured in the magazine in the past include the Pioneers of Change Arts for Social Change Learning Journey in Brazil, the Environmental Management team at Pikitup, the Conservatory of the Greenhouse, and the ‘Drop in Arts Project’ at Lapeng Child and Family Resource Centre. Regeneration magazine is distributed for free to local arts and cultural organisations in Johannesburg’s inner city, including lower-income areas like Hillbrow, Joubert Park, Constitution Hill, Braamfontein and Newtown.
