Global Orphan Numbers Would be falling without AIDS

  • Since 2000, 3.8 million African children have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
  • By 2010, sub-Saharan Africa will be home to about 50 million orphaned children.
  • More than a third will have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
  • Between 2001 and 2003 alone the global number of children orphaned due to AIDS rose from 11.5 million to 15 million - most were in Africa.
  • In Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean orphan numbers have dropped by about 10% since 1990.
