Working with Men for HIV Prevention and Care
Publication Date
Summary
According to this publication, engaging men as partners is a critical component in AIDS prevention. This document has been produced in order to help those working with men, specifically in the field of HIV prevention, as well as more broadly in the areas of improved sexual and reproductive health. The publishers suggest that it is likely to be of special relevance to:
- those who haven't yet worked with men, but now want to develop a more inclusive approach to HIV prevention and the promotion of sexual health
- those who want to initiate discussions about existing gender relations or to challenge existing beliefs about masculinity; and
- those who are already working with boys or men on health or other issues, but who now want to include a focus on HIV and sexual health
The twelve projects covered in this publication were selected because they represented a diverse range of interventions with men. It was believed that an analysis of their strategies and lessons learned would generate common ground on men's needs, associated with HIV/AIDS and their general health, and would provide insights into effective approaches for working with men. The projects include: Project Papai in Brazil; Adolescent Reproductive Health and Development Programme in Zimbabwe; Filipino Men and Domestic Violence Project in the Philippines; Men, Sex and AIDS Project in Botswana; Healthy Highways Project in India; Mathare Youth Sports Association AIDS Awareness Programme in Kenya; ILPES in Costa Rica; Amigos Siempre Amigos in the Dominican Republic; Project Lambda in Colombia; Faith, Hope, Love in Ukraine; The AIDS Support Organization in Uganda; and the Royal Thai Army in Thailand.
