Poverty Has a Child's Face in Costa Rica

Inter-America Development Bank statistics indicate that poverty in Costa Rica fell from 20.6% in 2002 to 18.5% in 2003.

However,

  • Nearly 50% (375,133) of the poor in Costa Rica (total population under 4 million) are children under the age of 18.
  • Approximately 113,523 children are part of the labour force.
  • In 1977, the poorest 20% of the population received 4.5% of the total wealth while the richest 20% had 47.4%.
  • By 2002, the poorest 20% had 3.7% of total wealth and the richest 20% had 51.3%.
  • In 2001 4.9% of the GDP was set aside for education while the Constitution requires a minimum of 6% of the GDP.
  • 51% of the budget of the State of Costa Rica for the year 2004 is financed by debt.
