Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV in Asia: Practical Guidance for ProgramsPublication Date2002 SummaryThis report focusses on five Asian countries most affected by mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV/AIDS: Cambodia, China, India, Myanmar, and Thailand. Intended as a technical resource, a programmatic guide, and a basis for policy dialogue and coordination, it provides technical background (including mechansisms, timing, and risk factors), information about the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric AIDS, discussion of operational issues encountered in developing programmes to prevent MTCT, problems related to voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) initiatives, and concerns related to the provision of medical care and social support for the mother and the infant living with HIV/AIDS.
In addition to a description of MTCT prevention efforts in Asia, this report includes data presented in the form of annexes, tables, and figures. These data support recommendations on how to move forward in the area of MTCT prevention programmes in Asia, beginning with the directive that "Asian governments need to assess their national and subnational HIV epidemics and assess their situation with respect to MTCT."
