Working with Conflict: Skills and Strategies for Action

Publication Date

September 2000

Summary

For people working in areas affected by conflict and violence, this book provides a range of tools - processes, ideas, techniques - for tackling conflict. These tools have been developed over a number of years by the organisation, Responding to Conflict (RTC), in collaboration with more than 300 practitioners from around the world.

The book is divided into four sections:

Part I is a guide to understanding conflict: discussing issues such as power, culture, identity, gender and rights.

Part II explains how to build effective strategies to address conflict, including how to influence policy within organisations.

Part III focuses on action: explaining how to intervene directly in situations of acute conflict; address the consequences; and work on the "social fabric which conditions the emergence of conflict".

Part IV introduces the skills involved in the processes of evaluation in order to improve future interventions.

Examples and cases in the book are drawn from around the world - including Cambodia, Afghanistan, South Africa, Kenya, Northern Ireland and Colombia. The book highlights the options available to individuals and organisations; aims to equip them with a basis on which they can plan what responses are possible; and strengthens their capacity to engage in useful interventions. An Appendix provides lists of key conflict-related and peace-building resources, including organisations, publications and websites.

This book is published in English, Bahasa Indonesian, Georgian, Russian & French. Please contact the RTC office for information on these and other translations.
