Social Marketing for Adolescent Sexual Health: Results of Operations Research Projects in Botswana

Publication Date

June 2000

Summary

The aim of the Social Marketing for Adolescent Sexual Health project is to increase awareness among policymakers and programme managers of the potential effectiveness of social marketing programmes for reducing the vulnerability of adolescents to HIV/AIDS. Population Services Internation (PSI)'s local affiliates carried out the activities in collaboration with other organisations in each country and in connection with pre-existing, nationwide social marketing programmes. Social marketing programmes use commercial marketing techniques, including media, to motivate healthy behaviour among low-income populations.

This report describes the major project components, the impact of the projects on adolescents' beliefs and behaviour with regard to sexual and reproductive health, and implications for future programmes.

Issues addressed:
  • Social Marketing Interventions
  • Impact on Adolescent's Beliefs and Behaviour
  • Advocating for Adolescent Reproductive Health
  • Programme Lessons and Implications for the future
