People's Health Assembly (PHA) Book Series

Publication Date

2000

Summary

This series of five books, which average 60 pages each, has been produced as part of a national campaign in India called the Jan Swasthya Sabha (JSA). This advocacy movement is being coordinated by a National Coordination Committee (NCC) consisting of 15 Indian networks of people's movements and NGOs. JSA is the Indian circle of the People's Health Movement (PHM), a worldwide movement to establish health and equitable development as top priorities through comprehensive primary health care and action on the social determinants of health. This social movement grew out of the People's Health Assembly (PHA), which took place in December 2000 in Savar, Bangladesh.

The series was developed to guide the block, district and state seminars that were taking place in preparation for PHA. Information is provided as a background for advocacy work, in the form of description, charts, and cartoons.

Books in the series include:
  • Book 1: What Globalisation does to People's Health - focuses on globalisation and how it impacts the health of the economically poor.
  • Book 2: Whatever Happened to Health for All by 2000 AD? - treats the making and unmaking of the 1978 Alma Ata declaration.
  • Book 3: Making Life Worth Living! - highlights ways to meet basic health care needs, from an intersectoral perspective.
  • Book 4: A World Where We Matter! - explores health care issues relevant to women, children, and marginalised groups.
  • Book 5: Confronting Commercialisation of Health Care - provides a brief introduction to the ethical and professional dimensions of the growing trend toward privatising all health care services.
