The OECD, UN, and World Bank have identified 6 social goals as part of a new international development strategy to be achieved by 2015. Base Line looks at progress towards the Gender goal.
The Goal: Demonstrating progress toward gender equality and the empowerment of women by eliminating gender disparities in primary and secondary education by 2005.
Progress to 1998:
Overall, good progress has been made towards achieving a balance between girls and boys enrolled in schools. South Asia is behind but has made some progress. In Latin America and the Caribbean there are actually more girls than boys in school. However, these trends mask continued disparities between rich and poor and a growth in the numbers of boys leaving school early.
