Summary

The book, "e-Content: Voices From the Ground Version 1.0", was launched during the UN's World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva on December 19-12, 2003. The book contains 30 interviews with e-Content experts from 30 countries in all continents.

This book is the first step in producing an inventory on e-Content and e-Content policy per country. Each country's description was written through an email interview with the expert and recorded in printed form. From January 2004 onwards the interviews will be online and can be updated. Also new interviews from other countries will be added. The editorial team is in touch with experts in 136 countries. The objective is to establish a network of experts in all 191 UN associated countries.

Each chapter includes information about the e-content scenario in that country, ICT infrastructure, government policy, contributions of private and civil societies in e-enabling the country, and some very basic numbers to put the country's ICT status in perspective.

The book was originally conceived in Dubai, where 35 members of the Grand Jury member of the World Summit Award Jury met in Dubai in October 2003 in order to select the 40 "best practices in e-content and creativity" from more than 800 nominations. Osama Manzar, co-editor, solicited the 30 interviews from his colleagues in the Grand Jury and will solicit the other 106 interviews from the national experts involved in the World Summit Awards. The book was edited, produced, printed and bound in 40 days in India. The Digital Empowerment Foundation and World Summit Award have published the book.
