Arab and Iranian Media Comments on the First Anniversary of September 11 -

Date

August 29 2003

A report from PANOS Paris took the moment of the first anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York and Washington to analyse Islamic press coverage. It found that the recollection and analysis of these events in the Islamic media were very different from that of the Western-dominated international media.

In the south, the destruction of the 'Twin Towers' was not seen as the 'founding event of a new international order' but was instead viewed as one more link in an old chain of conflict. The Israeli-Palestinian question was often identified as the heart of a growing quarrel between the West and the Islamic world.

The study used articles from Iranian, Saudi Arabian, Palestinian and Moroccan newspapers and magazines, as well as from the websites of the TV network Al-Jazeera and of Al-Quds AlArabi, a pan-Arabic daily published in London.
