Asia Needs More Condoms for Sex Workers

Date

September 2 2003

The WHO says that billions more condoms are needed to stop Asia becoming the epicentre of AIDS by 2010.

  • The Asia-Pacific region has 7 million people with HIV but 30 million people could be infected in India and China by 2010.
  • There is demand for 24 billion condoms per year but only 6 to 9 billion are distributed.
  • A substantial portion of infections in Asia are attributable to the commercial sex industry with significant spread from small pools of infected sex workers.
  • In China alone, over a billion condoms are needed for the sex industry (official estimates claim 6 million sex workers with 0.5 clients per night).
  • Less than 20% of sex workers consistently use condoms in China.
  • Thailand and Cambodia are considered the only countries in Asia with falling infection rates.
  • Last year, the sex industry accounted for 16% of HIV infections in Thailand and 21% in Cambodia - rates considered low in Asia.
