Japanese Award for the Most Innovative Development Project

The Japanese Award for the Most Innovative Development Project carries a first prize of US$30,000 and second prize of US$5,000. Finalists are invited at Global Development Network (GDN)'s expense to present proposals at the Ninth Annual Global Development Conference, Brisbane, January 2008.



The Five Themes

The five themes selected for this year’s competition are:

  1. Fragile States: Addressing Vulnerability.
  2. Household Exposure to Risk: Effects on Poverty .
  3. The Rule of Law: Providing Security for Development .
  4. Women’s Rights, Security and Development: Challenges and Opportunities .
  5. Natural Resources: Risks and Implications for Sustaining
    Development .

The Global Development Network seeks projects which embody a

fresh approach to an important development need and hold the

greatest promise for benefiting the economically poor in

developing and transition countries. Criteria include the degree

of innovation and the potential for broad application of the

project in other countries. Funding for the Award is provided by

the Government of Japan..

Project description

The project description must include:

  1. a detailed description of the project's design and

    implementation;

  2. a list and brief description of the roles of the senior

    personnel of the institution;

  3. an assessment of the project's progress to date, including

    its impact on intended beneficiaries. If available, please submit

    the executive summary of an external, independent evaluation;

  4. a proposal for the expansion of the project; and
  5. a list of the organisations participating in the project and

    their respective contribution.

Eligibility criteria

The Award is open to all development projects in Africa, Asia,

Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, Pacific Islands,

and the transition economies of Europe and Central Asia. The

project must be managed by an institution with its headquarters

in a country in one of the above regions. The project must have

been implemented before December 31 2005. Applicants from

previous years (except finalists) may reapply, but they must

update the application. Finalists from previous years cannot

submit an application in the subsequent 3 years. After that time

they may resubmit only if there have been significant new

developments to the project. Submissions concerning a more

recently implemented project or only a project idea will not be

considered.
