December 1 2006

Senior-level print and radio journalists from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with experience in covering health issues are invited to apply for the Panos Fellowship on Global Trade and Access to Treatment.

Panos Institute Southern Africa (PSAf) is an independent, regional information and communication organisation that seeks to cultivate an enabling environment for marginalised people to participate actively in informed and inclusive public and policy debates and decision-making processes by generating information and creating effective communication channels.

PSAf's HIV and AIDS programme seeks to provide information and stimulate public debate on HIV/AIDS to ensure that the response to the pandemic is shared and driven by those most affected.

Panos will select one print and one radio journalist each from Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Lesotho. The selected journalist should be at a senior level (senior reporter, health editor and sub-editor) with proven ability to write investigative and analytical stories that can bring about policy debate in the country.

Each journalist will be expected to produce two in-depth investigative and factual four A4 page briefs related to access to treatment in the period December 2006 to February 2007. The features should include perspectives and capture the voices of people living with HIV and AIDS, rural communities, marginalised persons, people with disabilities as well as a number of key stakeholders including HIV/AIDS NGOs, traditional leaders, Faith based organisations and governments. It should raise the most pertinent issues surrounding HIV/AIDS access to treatment in a country which have not been covered by mainstream media before. The broadcasts will be produced in English and translated into one main local language of the country.

Each selected journalist will be awarded a fellowship of a total value of US$2,000. The amount of US$500 will cover transport and other expenses involved in investigating material for the two features and will be paid at signing the contract. The rest of the money US$1500 will be paid on submission of satisfactory drafts.

In addition, all materials published under the fellowship will be uploaded onto Panos and other websites for wider circulation. The journalists will work closely with the Panos Institute during the period of the fellowship.

For print, journalists are advised to send a CV, two latest samples of related published work and two abstracts of their own story ideas outlining the issues they hope to highlight and their possible sources of information. Each abstract should be at most one page long.
