Administered by NetAid, the Global Action Awards honour 14-18 year olds - those who were in high school during the 2005-2006 academic year in the United States - who have shown leadership in areas such as preventing HIV/AIDS, alleviating hunger and improving access to education. Honourees will be awarded USD $5,000 for their higher education or to benefit a charitable cause of their choice.

Projects may involve organising advocacy campaigns, raising funds, volunteering, or using media and technology to involve others in the fight against global poverty. Issues addressed by projects should be global in nature and may include but are not limited to:

  • Alleviating hunger.
  • Promoting human rights, children's rights or gender equity.
  • Increasing access to clean drinking water, healthcare or education.
  • Preventing and treating HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis or other diseases.
  • Supporting a sustainable environment.

NetAid was established in 1999 through a partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Cisco Systems. Their mission is to mobilise people in developed countries to make ending extreme poverty a global priority.
