START/NORAD Fellowship for Doctoral Research and Dissertation on Global Environmental Change Tenable at African Universities

The International START (global change SysTem for Analysis, Research, and Training) Secretariat calls for proposals for fellowships in support of outstanding young African scientists who are currently conducting research leading to the completion of a doctoral dissertation on global environmental change issues. The fellowships are supported through a grant to START from the Norwegian Agency for Development (NORAD).

Successful applicants will receive awards for up to two years of study and research leading to the completion of a Ph.D. dissertation or for the final year of graduate study combined with one-year of post-doctoral research.

Proposals should focus on some aspect of global environmental change in Africa. Awards will provide for tuition, research materials, and a small living allowance.

Application Information

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree programme leading to a Ph.D. degree in an African university, and have completed one year of a doctoral study programme. Applicants must have completed their Master’s degree (or equivalent). Candidates must be 35 years of age at time of application or younger. Applicants must be pursuing a doctoral degree related to global environmental change issues pertinent to Africa.

Applications must include the following elements:

  • a completed programme application form,
  • a detailed proposal that explicitly describes the proposed research effort on a topic on global environmental change issue(s) in Africa and should include:


  • (a) problem statement,

    (b) objectives,

    (c) summary of methods,

    (d) workplan, and

    (e) a list of expected outcomes.

    The proposal should include a table detailing what has been accomplished and what remains to be done. It should be concise, not exceeding seven pages (10 point minimum font size).

  • a curriculum vitae of the candidate
  • an original letter of recommendation from the candidate’s graduate advisor, which must include advisor’s certification that the student has completed one year of research towards a PhD (This must be a scanned or faxed original, no electronic signatures will be accepted.)
  • a letter of admission/candidacy to graduate school at an African university an itemized, justified budget (materials and supplies will be considered on a case-by-case basis.)
  • a complete list of all current and anticipated funding support.
