Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships

Region

Caribbean, Latin America, South Asia, South Pacific

Deadline Date

August 15 2007

The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships (AFPF) is a United States-based non-profit, non-governmental organisation that gives developing-world journalists the opportunity to work as reporters in U.S. newsrooms. The programme, which runs from mid-March to September, is offered annually to approximately ten professional print journalists between the ages of 25 and 35. Applicants must have an excellent command of written and spoken English, early to mid-career status, with at least three years experience as a print journalist, a demonstrated commitment to a career in journalism in the home country, and current employment as a journalist with an independent print media organisation in a developing or transitional country.

In addition to six months of newsroom experience, the programme provides an allowance for journalism books, conferences, short-term professional visits and a mentor exchange; offers a Training the Trainer class to prepare Fellows to share what they’ve learned on the programme; works with home and host news organisations to create specific plans for the Fellows; offer specialised fellowships by topic and region; and teaches newsroom management skills. The Fellowship covers all costs of programme-related international and domestic U.S. travel, health insurance, and provides a monthly stipend to cover basic living expenses. It is highly recommended that Fellows bring additional money with them. The stipend is not sufficient to provide support for spouses or other dependants.

Fellowships include the Daniel Pearl Fellowships, which honour the life and
work of the "Wall Street Journal" South Asia correspondent who was kidnapped
and murdered in 2002. Daniel Pearl fellows come from South Asia, North
Africa, and the Middle East, areas that Pearl covered as a journalist, and
their work encourages dialogue among different cultures and religions.

Applicants should submit a complete application with the following: application form, CV/resume, personal statement (1- to 2-page essay), fellowship goals essay (1- to 2-page essay), two letters of reference, employer’s endorsement and guarantee of salary, four articles (must be in English or translated to English), passport size photograph of yourself, one issue of the publication for which you work, a copy of your press credentials, and a copy of your valid passport.

The deadline for application is August 15 2007.
