Panos/Stop TB Media Fellowships

Country

Bangladesh, Botswana, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Pakistan, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe

Region

Global, South Asia, Africa, Caribbean

Deadline Date

December 1 2006

The Panos Global AIDS Programme and Stop TB Partnership invite print and broadcast journalists from Bangladesh, Botswana, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Pakistan, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe to apply for a fellowship to write/produce features on issues around tuberculosis (TB), and TB & HIV/AIDS. A total of three journalists, including both broadcast and print will be awarded the fellowships in each country. Two additional fellowships will be awarded in India. Fellowships will run from December 2006 to June 2007.

Each fellowship will involve working closely with the Panos Global AIDS Programme, the Stop TB Partnership and a panel of experts on TB and communication in TB and/or HIV/AIDS in the countries specified.

The aim of the fellowships is to enable print and broadcast journalists in selected high burden countries in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean to better explore and understand the linkages between TB, HIV/AIDS, poverty, urbanisation and other socio economic vulnerabilities. In particular, in Africa the project will focus on highlighting the urgency for collaborative TB/HIV actions at all levels to counter the dual epidemics.

Selected journalists will be awarded a grant of US$500 each, plus travel and data collection expenses, and will be expected to travel outside their base to produce at least three feature articles or programmes to be published/broadcast in mainstream media between February and April 2007.

Application Information

Applicants must submit the following:

  • curriculum vitae
  • up to five samples of published/broadcast work (tapes or transcripts) on health/development issues
  • a 500-word write up explaining why the applicant should be considered for the fellowship along with a tentative proposal for their research
  • two references from persons who have known the applicant professionally

Only journalists who are citizens of and resident in Bangladesh, Botswana, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Pakistan, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe are eligible to apply.
