PROGRAMMES

1. Youth Empowerment Foundation Hotline & "Healthy Life Plan" - Nigeria - focused on awareness of an HIV/AIDS telephone hotline for youth in Lagos. The strategy included use of multiple media including TV and radio spots, print adverts appearing in popular newspapers and magasines, and posters and cards distributed to young people in high schools, universities and youth centers across Lagos. The hotline is also featured on billboards located on major roadways as well as on posters that are placed in markets and bus terminals where out-of-school youth work or congregate.

2. Project for the Integral Reconstitution of the Wixarika Territory & Habitat - Mexico - aims to protect indigenous culture and biodiversity. The project is managed by the traditional Huichol decision-making process of consensus within the 50,000-member population. Workshops strive to, among other things, train indigenous people in environmental management skills, encourage Huichol participation in the national and global indigenous rights movement, and establish a formal education regime that responds to indigenous needs, such as the need for computer skills essential to the creation of a data bank for land-use planning.

3. Higher Education Open & Distance Learning (ODL) Knowledge Base Project - Global - is a UNESCO initiative aiming to gauge the current state of knowledge among those involved in open and distance learning (ODL) in developing countries in order to determine the best way to support efforts in that area. A series of needs assessments was initiated in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, the Pacific, the Arab States Region, and in countries belonging to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

4. 'BOL' (SPEAK) series - India - includes 8 public service messages (PSMs) aiming to bring messages about domestic violence into Indian homes to foster discussion, debate, and action. Broadcast several times per day during March of 2002, the 'BOL' (SPEAK) TV PSMs challenge myths about domestic violence, portray women as agents rather than as victims, and introduce the possibility of relationships that need not resort to violence as a conflict resolution method. 5. Presse Jeune - Cameroon - is a network of youth organisations bringing together youths from primary and secondary schools, universities, and professional media. Presse Jeune publications include a magasine which encourages youth participation in human development, a journal for children 7-13 years old - and for students at secondary schools and colleges, and a magasine which focuses on health. The initiative also provides a computer and language training centre, an information and documentation centre, an internet center, a multimedia information centre on HIV/AIDS for young journalists, a programme for primary and secondary press animators.

IMPACT

6. National HIV/AIDS Media Campaign - Indonesia - After Phase 1, 94% of respondents were aware of AIDS; after Phase 2, 97% were aware; and after the Second Wave of Phase 2, 99% were aware. After Phase 1, 31% of respondents indicated an awareness of the role of needle sharing in HIV/AIDS transmission, with 46% after Phase 2 and 62% after the Second Wave of Phase 2. 23% of respondents exposed to the Phase 2 campaign indicated their intention to wear condoms and modify drug use, and 44% indicated this intention after the Second Wave of Phase 2.

7. Care for Health Campaign - Russia - Resulted in increased family planning counseling for women in the postpartum and postabortion period. 58.2% in the intervention group talked to a doctor or nurse about family planning after giving birth (as compared to 44.2% in the comparison group). 21.1% of those exposed to the intervention (as compared to 9.1% of those not exposed) left the hospital after their most recent delivery with modern methods of contraception or a prescription. 56.1% in the intervention group talked to a doctor or nurse about family planning following an abortion (as compared to 45.2% of those not exposed).

The film explores Sainath's approach to journalism, the role of journalism in development and his communication of the stories that people in rural areas have shared with him.
