Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health & Human RightsRegionGlobal Deadline DateJanuary 30 2006 The Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights has been established to honour Jonathan Mann and help to call continued attention to the vital links between health and human rights. The Award is presented annually to a leading practitioner in health and human rights. According to the Global Health Council, Jonathan Mann played a major role in focusing public attention on the fact that prejudice and discrimination were helping to drive and spread the AIDS epidemic. He realised early on that fueling the epidemic was not simply the virus itself, but discrimination against those at risk. The Award comes with a substantial financial prize to allow its recipient a measure of freedom to pursue his or her work in the important area of global health and human rights. A blue ribbon committee of international health and human rights experts selects the award recipient. The 2005 committee included Dr. Peter Piot of UNAIDS, U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Dr. Helene Gayle of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Barry Bloom of Harvard University and representatives of the three sponsoring organisations. The award is presented at the Awards Banquet during the Global Health Council's Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
