This award, offered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO), recognises "a person, organization or institution that has
made a notable contribution to
the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially
if this involved risk."


The award winner will receive US$25,000 and an object symbolising the award. The award is named in honour
of Colombian Journalist Guillermo Cano, who was killed in 1986 for his criticism of Colombian drug lords. It is
awarded every year on World Press Freedom Day.

Application Information

Candidates may be nominated by United Nations member states, and international and regional professional and
non-governmental organisations working in the field of journalism and freedom
of expression.


Submissions may be made in English or French, and member states and organisations may
submit up to 3 nominations.
