Offered by Consumers International Africa Office, the Kalam Awards note the mutual concern shown by
consumers and the media on
issues such as:

  • The capacity of consumers to access basic goods and services;
  • The security and safety of goods and services consumed on a large scale;
  • Consumer access to information, consumer education and the right to be
    heard; and
  • The right to a safe environment


The awards seek to "acknowledge the best of the media's productions and
celebrate excellence in consumer journalism in the continent so as to encourage
the publication of impacting reporting items on consumer issues throughout
Africa." The award offers prizes in three categories:

  • Print and online media (such as websites)
  • Radio
  • Television


All winners will receive a laptop computer, US$500 and a return trip to the
awards ceremony in Ghana.

These Awards are open to reporters, editors, freelancers, cameramen, photographers, anchors and
other journalists, who may enter
individually or as an organisation.
