Programme Summary

Kabissa is a non-profit organisation that uses technology to strengthen organisations working to improve the lives of the people in Africa. Launched in 1999, Kabissa aims to help African civil society organisations put information and communication technologies (ICTs) to work for the benefit of the people they serve. This includes providing ICT services, developing training materials and programmes, and creating opportunities for information sharing.

Communication Strategies

The organisation aims to build ICT capacity through three key programmes designed to help African civil society organisations do their work better through the effective use of internet:

  • Services - Kabissa provides the organisations with accessible, affordable, and secure internet services specifically designed to address the difficult working conditions they face. These services include web site hosting, email accounts, online newsletters, and discussion groups.
  • Training - The organisation has a Time to Get Online programme that combines self-learning materials with hands-on workshops to empower the organisations to integrate the internet into their work. The programme is structured around Kabissa's Steps to Success methodology, which promotes the idea that organisations must gradually build their internet skills and use internet tools appropriate for their own communities and environment.
  • Information sharing - Kabissa creates opportunities for organisations to network, share experiences, and learn from each other. Its support aims to strengthen ties between member organisations through Kabissa's Member Profiles Directory, monthly eNewsletter, online discussions, and space for sharing opportunities from and for members.

The Kabissa website not only provides information about Kabissa’s activities, but also aims to act as an ICT resource centre providing information about events, web tools and software, learning resources, and opportunities.

Kabissa seeks to conduct its activities with the following guiding principles:

  • working in close cooperation with partner organisations that can provide local expertise, support, and resources wherever possible;
  • making its operations transparent to the Kabissa community and the general public;
  • employing the services of companies that share Kabissa's vision whenever possible avoiding any source of income derived from activities which indisputably conflict with Kabissa's vision; and
  • developing, using and promoting software and content that is freely available under open source licensing agreements.

Key Points

Kabissa believes civil society organisations working for positive social change must be supported and nurtured. It aims to provide its members with tools and resources that can support the work of individual organisations as well as strengthen the connections between organisations.

Kabissa hopes that the new digital technologies, in particular the internet will allow activists to access networks of knowledge, mutual support, and financial resources on a scale that otherwise would be next to impossible.
