Programme SummaryCommunication StrategiesThis project draws centrally on information and communication technologies (ICTs) to provide information on relationships and SRH in a format that is designed to be both engaging and interactive. The radio series takes listeners' questions via telephone, addressing issues such as violence against women, the role of rap music in influencing young people's sexual attitudes and behaviour, same-sex relationships, and sexual pleasure. At the heart of the radio programmes are the voices of young people keeping audio diaries, such as a pregnant teenager from Tanzania and a young HIV-positive person in Uganda. Listeners follow their dilemmas, such as whether to keep the baby and leave school, or how to prepare to tell a family about an HIV-positive test result. As cellular phone ownership and use is rising fast in East Africa, a telephone help-line and a text messaging service have been developed to redirect callers and text senders to local support and advice. Regional and local fact sheets are also being provided free of charge to audiences who are literate. These sheets include more detailed information about the issues raised in the programme. English translations of the Swahili fact sheets are also available. The Swahili language project website provides a means of listening again to the programme via an audio link which is refreshed weekly as each new programme is produced. It also provides access to some of the audio diaries that have been created for the programme by young people. The site incorporates a glossary of information on SRH for young people.
