Programme Summary

The Mubende Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS Project is a reproductive health awareness programme for in- and out-of-school children and youth aged from 5-24 years. The project is being organised by the Mubende Education Network (MUEDNET), an indigenous non-governmental organisation (NGO) operating in Uganda's Mubende District whose goal is to foster high-quality accessible, equitable, and relevant education. The project aims to improve awareness, spur behavioural change, and promote information dissemination on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS among Uganda's children and young people.

Communication Strategies

The project uses face-to-face, interpersonal communication strategies in an effort to enhance knowledge and inspire change at different levels of Mubende District's population. MUEDNET aims to achieve its objectives through school-based reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and rights-related programmes and activities. The organisation also provides life skills education to students, as well as non-formal programmes for children and youth. The idea here is to extend reproductive health and HIV/AIDS education from the schools to the community for greater awareness. MUEDNET also builds vocational practical skills for economic empowerment for those who may not be able to afford to continue with education.

Examples of programme activities and approaches include:

  • Sharing knowledge, facts and practices aimed at improving and promoting greater awareness in schools for behavioural change in 8 sub-counties where Pearl and UNICEF programmes are not being implemented.
  • Setting up peer groups or health clubs in schools which work to raise awareness about such issues as reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, as well as nutrition, hygiene, primary health care, environmental protection, sanitation, and malaria control.
  • Empowering teachers and peers/peer groups through trainings, peer group education, and health club debates, theatre for development and health education talks. The focus here is on helping children identify the root causes of HIV/AIDS and make informed decisions about prevention.
  • Selecting non-formal schools and some formal schools for vocational and practical skills as part of life skills building.
  • Promoting reproductive health for those in school and out of school by providing health care services, including diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and by encouraging condom use for prevention of STIs and pregnancies.
  • Networking with other organisations and institutions dealing in reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and rights for greater impact.
