LEARN FoundationCountryBangladesh RegionSouth Asia Programme SummaryEstablished in 1997, the LEARN Foundation aims to strengthen the ability of rural people in Bangladesh, especially young people, to acquire knowledge, particularly technical and information technology-based knowledge, in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner to enable them to compete effectively in the knowledge driven world. This includes engaging in activities to deliver education and computer skills training in rural communities in Bangladesh and helping to access infrastructure and opportunities for economic development. Communication StrategiesThe LEARN Foundation aims to transform rural 'ecosystems' with wireless broadband through a holistic approach: engaging rural communities, through knowledge diffusion in schools, building Wi-FI access networks in joint collaboration with rural students, traders, farmers and other groups who want and need information access. The LEARN Foundation engages in activities to help train rural people, as well as develop technology access, such as community technology centres. Specific programmes include the following.
The LEARN Foundation strategy also includes expanding skills and networks through replication and encouraging community trainers. Development IssuesTechnology, Youth, Economic Development Key PointsAccording to the LEARN Foundation website, the identified intended communities for the organisations' activities is made up of 150 villages with 100,000+ inhabitants within 7 km from the centre points, including more than 1,000,000 inhabitants and 1500 villages comprising about 220,000 households. Out of which about 9% are classified as rich (annual household income >$ 1600), 19% as middle class (between $1000-$1600) and the rest as poor (less than $1000). About 47% inhabitants of this densely populated region are below the age of 20, out of which only about 10% go to schools. The other 90% of children either do not or cannot attend schools.
