Programme Summary

Morganonline aims to foster understanding of the marine environment and its protection using film, photography, a website, newsletters and articles. The organisation aims to highlight technological developments of the scientific, recreational and business communities whose work is based in or around the sea, where protection of marine habitats is critical to their long term success.

Communication Strategies

The crew of the yacht Morgan will be sailing to different conservation projects to film their work, gather information and share experiences with the goal of protecting marine environments. These projects can be run by conservation agencies or be the positive initiatives of the business community. Morganonline began from the the Canary Islands on global sailing route that will explore marine conservation issues in diverse locations.

Through cross-media produced along the way, Morganonline works to create awareness about the protection of the marine environment. Morganonline is producing a number of documentary films about marine life and conservation initiatives during this circumnavigation of the world. These will focus on research, conservation activities and best practices carried out by industry, universities, conservation organisations, research bodies, dive centres, and other groups and individuals concerned with preserving and protecting the marine environment. The documentaries aim to be informative and are being produced for non-specialist audiences to increase their knowledge and awareness of the marine environment, and for diverse groups with an interest in the marine environment.

A prime focus for many of the documentaries will be on applied technology and best sustainable business practices in marine conservation. By doing this, Morganonline aims to encourage companies - the designers and producers of technology - to think about the use of their technology in research and conservation. This focus on the interface between commercial interest and conservation aims to not only give recognition to the valuable work already being done, but to share methodologies and ideas between these fields. In this way, conservation methods will be more widely disseminated. By sharing knowledge and raising awareness among the general public, Morganonline aims to encourage local and global efforts to protect the oceans.

Morganonline images and resources are being used on local television, in schools for educational purposes, by the news media, and by conservation agencies.

Key Points

The name Morganonline is derived from the two masted ketch, the Morgan, which houses the crew and the audio/visual studio of Morganonline. Loosely translated, the word ‘morgan’ means ‘born from the sea’ in a few old European languages.
