Search for Common Ground, Macedonia (SFCG) initiated Mozaik in 1997 to support Macedonian educational institutions in bridging the gap created by linguistic, cultural and ethnic segregation in schools and kindergartens. Mozaik is a model of multilingual and multicultural pre-schooling in public kindergartens. The broad aim is to teach tolerance and respect for the diversity of cultures and to help different ethnic communities collaborate and communicate with each other. The goal is to socialise children into a multicultural environment at the earliest possible age. Through equal usage of multiple languages and direct contact between different cultures, Mozaik works to reach children at an early age - to the end of creating an environment that fosters respect and understanding among Macedonia's ethnic communities. As of June 2006, the project has entered the final phase of institutionalisation, aiming to incorporate Mozaik methodology within the public educational system in Macedonia by the end of 2007. At the same time SFCG introduced Mozaik activities in Kosovo, by conducting preliminary works for establishing first Mozaik groups in late 2006 - in a partnership with Save the Children.

Communication Strategies

Interpersonal exchange - in the form of school curriculum development - is used as a tool for building confidence and trust in everyday relationships. Through its child-centred design, Mozaik aims to build children's self esteem and confidence and create a positive, realistic self-image.

Specifically, although Mozaik adheres to the standard Macedonian kindergarten curriculum, it focuses on children's social and emotional development. The project has two main components: introducing a bilingual approach in kindergartens and developing a child-centred approach that includes age-appropriate training in conflict-resolution skills for children. Children learn through games and play, using modern interactive methods and non-competitive models for solving conflicts.

SFCG claims that "Education in Macedonia is highly segregated based on ethno-linguistic criteria. Because children from the country's various communities commonly attend separate classrooms, from kindergarten through high school - and even at university - most children rarely come into contact with peers from other communities. When they do, these contacts are frequently negative, complicated by prejudice and poor communication. Through such isolation, children absorb stereotypes about 'others' from the adults in their lives and perpetuate negative social attitudes in their own adulthood."

During its first phase of implementation, the project included 6 groups of Macedonian- and Albanian-speaking children ages 3-7. In 2005, SFCG opened three additional groups and increased the diversity of participants by expanding the model to Serbian- and Turkish-speaking children. SFCG is working to integrate Mozaik formally into the Macedonian public education system.
