Community Media ProgrammeCountryKenya RegionAfrica Programme SummaryThis programme is focussed towards the development of community-based media in Kenya, East Africa and East and Southern Africa sub-region. Composed of many groups in an international network, the project works to support advocacy and training activities of the Kenyan Community Media Network, co-ordinate fundraising, technical and training aspects of an east African pilot project to establish three community radio stations. Communication StrategiesThree community radio stations and resource centres were established. A national network involves community groups in relevant policy-making for media in Kenya. An advocacy and training programme are utilized. EcoNews Africa provides legal cover, resource and communications assistance for demanding constitutional and legal amendments, repeals and additions to media constitution. Key PointsThe premise for this work is that media owned, produced by and controlled by for and about communities can serve as a vital mode of communication for debate on development, governance and human rights at the local level and for th e preservation and promotion of local culture and indigenous knowledge. This media can provide critical two-way conduits for the flow of information between the local level and the national and international levels of policy makers and vice versa.
