Exploration of Basic Learning Competencies and Girls’ Sexual Maturation and Practices

Countries

Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe

Programme Summary

The Rockefeller Foundation (RF) is embarking on a research-based exploration, expected to be completed by August 2000, that aims at investigating whether the issues of acquisition of basic learning competencies and sexual maturation are viewed as sufficiently important and thus, a viable base for the development of a long-term investment enabling RF to collaborate with selected countries in improving educational participation.

Communication Strategies

The exploration phase includes Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Country Coordinators (CCs) - from among senior professional members of staff in the host institutions - will be commissioned to coordinate identified in-country researchers and national teams to carry out the exploration. Two African consultants in education have been identified to support the CCs and the country teams and to work towards an integrated regional report.

Development Issues

Women, Youth, Family Planning, Life skills, Education.

Key Points

The two issues to be investigated are not confined to Africa. It is proposed that the investigation should take into account global perspective particularly relevant initiatives in other developing countries. In this regard: As part of the exploration cognisance will be made of global initiatives, e.g. those under the aegis of UNESCO and UNICEF, in the sphere of basic learning competencies and life skills.

And article in the April 2007 African Studies Review, "Life Skills, Sexual Maturation and Sanitation: What's (Not) Happening in Our Schools? An Exploratory Study from Kenya" provides details from the project in Kenya.
